Last week, Lissette Rodriguez-Cortes, who graduated from White Plains High School, was detained by federal officers near Bryant & Stratton College in Syracuse, charging her with violating the Immigration and Nationality Act. According to a lohud report, she was released on Monday from the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility at the behest of advocates working on her family’s behalf.
The report states that U.S. Border Patrol agents detained Rodriguez-Cortes because she was not in possession of proper immigration documents that “would allow her to legally enter, pass through or reside” in the country.
Rodriguez-Cortes had been held on $15,000 bail, which led her brother Bryan to set up a GoFundMe fundraising campaign on her behalf which garnered the family tens of thousands of dollars in just days.
Her brother said that Lissette has lived in the country since she was 14 and has Special Immigrant Juvenile Status while she awaits the opportunity for a visa to become available so she can apply for a green card.
